Wytwarzanie probiotyków farmaceutycznych generuje znaczne ilości supernatantów pofermentacyjnych, stanowiących wyzwanie pod kątem ładunku ChZT (Chemicznego Zapotrzebowania Tlenu) i BZT (Biochemicznego Zapotrzebowania Tlenu).

Recent advances in cosmetic biotechnology have enabled the development of highly engineered cosmetic ingredients designed to interact with specific molecular targets involved in skin physiology. Biotechnology-derived ingredients—including recombinant proteins and peptides, fermentation-derived metabolites, postbiotics, enzymes, bioengineered polysaccharides, and cell culture-derived bioactives—are increasingly characterized by precise mechanisms of action. While current evaluation strategies effectively characterize their biological activity, safety, and clinical efficacy, they provide limited insight into whether modulation of individual molecular pathways translates into meaningful improvements in overall skin function. As modern cosmetic biotechnology increasingly generates target-specific ingredients, evaluation strategies should extend beyond mechanistic efficacy toward integrated assessment of skin performance.
This conceptual paper proposes a systems-oriented framework for the functional evaluation of biotechnology-derived cosmetic ingredients, hereafter referred to as the Skin Functionality framework. Rather than introducing new efficacy biomarkers or replacing established assessment methods, the proposed framework reorganizes existing physiological, instrumental, clinical, and biomarker-based endpoints according to the biological functions they collectively support. In doing so, it provides a function-centered interpretation of mechanistic evidence within the context of integrated skin physiology.
Within the proposed framework, biological activity describes the interaction of an ingredient with defined molecular targets and signaling pathways, whereas biomarker responses indicate that specific biological processes have been modulated. Functional performance, however, evaluates whether these biological changes result in measurable improvements in the coordinated physiological functions that determine skin performance. These functions encompass structural integrity (barrier function and extracellular matrix organization), physiological homeostasis (hydration, pigmentation, sebum regulation, and microbiome balance), tissue responsiveness (immune and neurosensory regulation), and regenerative capacity. Assessment may incorporate validated physiological, instrumental, imaging, and biomarker-based endpoints, including transepidermal water loss, corneometry, cutaneous elasticity, inflammatory biomarkers, microbiome profiling, and other established functional measurements.
The novelty of the proposed framework lies not in introducing new biomarkers, but in organizing existing efficacy endpoints according to the biological functions they collectively support, thereby bridging mechanistic evidence with integrated skin performance. By providing a biologically meaningful link between molecular mechanisms and physiological outcomes, the framework offers a systems-oriented perspective for interpreting the efficacy of biotechnology-derived cosmetic ingredients. This approach may strengthen the translational relevance of efficacy assessment, improve the functional interpretation of biomarker data, and support the rational development and evaluation of next-generation biotechnology-derived cosmetic ingredients.
